Belmont U.M.C. Wayfinding
Refreshing My Church’s Design
My mother, who was the committee chair for my church at the time, asked if I would like to try and design new wayfinding signs to help newcomers get around the church easier. I first went around the church and took pictures of all the signs and figured out which of the room numbers were switching around (due to flood damage.) I then got to designing with the color palette seen here, and after meeting with my senior pastor and the head of communications, we had come to a decision on the style for the directional signs.
Applying the same identity to the thirty-six directional signs throughout the church, I also created a map based on the floor plans that my mom had given me. Four maps, seven elevator directories, and the thirty-six directional signs later, my mom and I were cutting the signs to size and placing them in acrylic holds. This was a great opportunity to independently follow the motions that I had been learning in college.
